How to Become a Social Innovations Fellow

Philadelphia region undergraduate and graduate students are invited to become a Philadelphia Social Innovations Fellow at the Philadelphia Social Innovations Journal and co-author a journal article.  Four topic areas have been selected for emphasis in the first year:

  • Human Capital (Workforce and Education)
  • Violence Prevention
  • Access to Healthcare
  • Partnership

Fellowship Program Goals

The Philadelphia Social Innovations Fellowship Program Goals are to:

  1. Provide students with exposure to leaders and organizations who have demonstrated a social impact in the areas of access to healthcare, violence prevention, positive development of human capital, and partnership.
  2. Foster student understanding through research and interviews of what social innovation is and its impact on the region, as well as possibility for replication.
  3. Positively influence the professional development of students and culture of future professionals so they may address social issues more effectively.

Fellowship Program

Each fellow will be assigned by the Philadelphia Social Innovations Journal staff to work with a social innovator leader and/or organization and under the supervision of an academic and/or Journal-based mentor, with the expected outcome being a journal-length, publication-quality article.

Fellows will be expected either in teams or individually to spend minimally 20-30 hours on background research, interviews with innovators and drafting the article.

The Philadelphia Social Innovations Journal staff will provide an orientation with regard to all the program expectations. Fellows will ultimately be responsible for co-authoring an article and PowerPoint messaging presentation that will be published on the PSIJ website.

Fellows who are selected to participate in this new social innovations movement will be teamed up with one of the Journal co-founders, Tine Hansen-Turton, CEO of NNCC and Chief Strategy Officer of PHMC, and Nicholas Torres, President of Education-Plus, Inc.
